This hide pouch elaborated with porcupine quill work is of Eastern Great Lakes origin. It dates from the mid 18th century. It currently resides at the Canadian Museum of History, Gatineau.

Tanned, black-dyed skin; porcupine quills, black, white, red-orange; strap of thongs wrapped in braided quillwork; metal cones; red-dyed animal hair.

Techniques or Format

Quill work in zigzag band, simple line and one-quill edging stitches.

Motifs and Patterns

The assemblage of motifs on this pouch- buffalo hooves, crosses and circles, is reminiscent of the designs on the large quill-embroidered hide in the exhibiton (Cat.62) (Patterns of Power).
